Larter was the naval warfare reporter for Defense News. The carrier Dwight D. Eisenhower returns to Naval Station Norfolk after a Middle East deployment Aug. 6. The U.S. Navy provided sea control and maritime superiority, which paved the way for the introduction of U.S. and allied air and ground forces. The Eisenhower is currently deployed in the Mediterranean Sea and the Roosevelt is homeported in San Diego after its last deployment was cut short by an outbreak of Covid-19 aboard the ship. But those deployments have steadily grown longer as the carrier. In 2013 through 2014 VFA-105 once again deployed aboard the USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75) in support of Operations Enduring Freedom and Inherent Resolve. Adding to the complexity, the Navy had limited funding due to budget cuts triggered by a stalemate in Congress over spending.
